Bindery Operator

About the role

Performs bindery functions and assists with shipping operations.

Responsibilities

  • Perform bindery functions such as cutting, folding, perfect binding, die cutting, laminating and saddle stitching.
  • Read job tickets to assess the bindery functions required, and record them.
  • Set up and operate power and manually operated bindery machines for gathering, stitching, folding, cutting, stapling, drilling, punching, padding, collating and binding materials.
  • Load and feed paper stock and other supplies into machines.
  • Examine finished products for defects.
  • Record job time, supplies used and departmental charges.
  • Transport stock by cart or manually.
  • Package materials for shipping and apply box labels identifying the product.
  • Trim edges of bound material.
  • Perform repairs and preventive maintenance on bindery machines, including cleaning, adjusting and oiling.
  • Maintain bindery materials by checking inventory and ordering items as needed.
  • Assist with the pre-planning of jobs as needed.
  • Examine stitched, collated, bound and unbound publications to confirm pages are bound in numerical or folio order, and to catch imperfect bindings, ink spots, torn, loose or uneven pages, and loose and uncut threads.
  • Insert illustrated pages, extra sheets and collated sets into catalogs, periodicals, directories, pocket portfolios or loose-leaf binders, and apply labels to envelopes or periodicals by hand or machine.
  • Apply cold and hot laminates of various thicknesses and sizes.
  • Use machinery to apply round corners to printed material.
  • Clean the work area around machinery.
  • Assist with press, shipping and delivery operations as needed.
  • Work cooperatively with all other employees and clients, contributing to a positive workplace.

What we are looking for

Education and experience

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Skills and abilities

  • Language: read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos; write simple correspondence; present information effectively one-on-one and in small groups.
  • Math: add and subtract two-digit numbers, multiply and divide with 10s and 100s, and apply these to money, weight, volume and distance.
  • Reasoning: apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions, and deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Computer: word processing software, internet software, EFG Logic software and Microsoft Outlook.
  • Certificates and licenses: none needed.
  • Supervisory responsibilities: none.

Work environment and physical demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to work near moving mechanical parts and toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, and sit, and is frequently required to talk or hear. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision (no deficiencies) and the ability to adjust focus.
